I think the positive of this change will be; that services will be available based on symptom severity instead of sub categorical labels.http://www.tampabay.com/news/health/aspergers-to-be-classified-as-autism-in-new-mental-health-bible/1072427

I remember when I got my first pair of glasses. The floor looked like it was on an incline for the first couple days until i got used to them. This might be scary for him until his eyes adjust.

That school sounds really cool Donna. I’m working on a career change. I’m going to start taking classes toward becoming a special education teacher after I finish writing my book. My family lives in NC, so I may be in touch in sixish years. :-)

Listening to the same song over and over again is very common with Aspies. It's one of few things I can do to calm my mind down sometimes. I wouldn't discourage this behavior. I listen to music every night when I get home from work. Sometimes for s…

Josh - I love it! It is exactly what I know about my child Ryan! If only he didn't HAVE to write that darn paper about how the Character FEELS, etc. If he could build things and take them apart or teach you about some physicist (that I don't even kn…

I'm glad your husband is starting to have an easier time with things now. I was diagnosed as an adult too. Until I discovered what was going on, I knew there were situations I just couldn't stand, but I didn't know why. The realization that I was ex…

It sounds like the social stories are happening on their own already. I think Jerry and the other boy both learned something today. These kinds of incidents stick. They are real and personal to all parties involved. It just sucks that someone always…

Results of my Neurological testing

I went to a neurologist to see if he could explain why I cannot visualize anything in my mind. The correct term would be a deficit in non verbal working memory. I had an MRI and MRI with contrast. I was sure something was going to be abnormal with the right hippocampus.

And the results.....

Everything looks fine. There are no tumors, signs of stroke, or lesions. From what the neurologist could tell, all the parts are there and nothing looks out of order.

He said the non verbal working memory… Continue

Adventures of the rejects

I wrote this book when I was in 5th grade. My mother kept it with my photo albums. I ran across it when I was going through the discovery process of learning about Aspergers. Some parts of this story are a snapshot of how I felt at that age. I knew I was different. It just took many years to figure out why.

A visualization of Autistic and NT brains as related to socialization.

Let’s pretend that our brains are canvases. Everything we see, smell, learn, discover, experience, ect is paint. This is kind of how the brain works. This is what makes everyone unique. Everything we experience causes a chemical reaction in our brains. That chemical reaction means that we are different than we were prior to the experience. Everything leaves a permanent mark that changes us forever. Just like a brush stroke on a canvas.

Now let’s say that every NT’s canvas is 2 feet by 2 feet sq… Continue

Almost there I hope.

My world was flipped upside down when I heard about AS. The notion of having an explanation for why I am who I am and why I was who I was is liberating. But it has also had some negative effects. I think I’m more observant of my differences now. I feel both liberated and more debilitated all at the same time. There was also some other complications.

“Walking my walk” as the author of Aspergers Inside Out put it was one of the most significant experiences of my life. This was reflecting on my pa… Continue

Sorry, I didn't quite get a chance to answer your question before. We do suspect a few people in my family may have Asperger's but have never actually been diagnosed. My grandma, dad, uncle and 3 of my cousins (one of them works for microsoft and lives in New York).

Thank you so much Josh. Your insight is very helpful. I love the Jerry just reaching his "deal with stuff threshold". I forget that sometimes he cannot do as much as we can....task upon task and errand upon errand. It was after we had done school and had gone to OT.

Also, how were you diagnosed with the visual processing disorder. We found one place that will do the testing, but it's not covered by insurance and very expensive. I never heard of that and thought all of his problems were with auditory processing, but the visual thing makes a great deal of sense. What therapies helped you overcome or what ways were you able to learn since you could not picture things in your head? Thank you so much again for your comment.

Thank you Josh for the compliment. I work very hard to try and understand how zach's brain is wired. I realized early on that his brain receives info very differently. As I said above, 1 word can make a difference. The same with reading a book ( which is not one of zach's favorite things to do) for the reason is the way things are written. If I could take a book and change the words around he probably would love reading and it's not that he can't read, he is a very good reader, just has a hard time with the way it's worded. Thanks again, Janet
