Ok, I'm not sure if it's a good thing to feed into obsessions, but that's what we did tonight. Ever since last year when my girlfriend Jen took Jerry to Monster Jam, he's been an addict. He watches it twice a day (if we let him) on the Speed chan…

I remember when I got my first pair of glasses. The floor looked like it was on an incline for the first couple days until i got used to them. This might be scary for him until his eyes adjust.

Bullies Update

I wanted to update everyone on the bully situation from Jerry's birthday party last Saturday.

I felt more and more like I really needed to confront my friend about Max's behavior at the party. So I called her yesterday and we spoke. The sad part is that, though Max admitted to biting, not pinching Jerry (explains the ugly mark on his arm), he denied everything else, even with me right there on the phone and his mom putting him on the spot. And he denied it calmly

Bullies

Ok friends, I went to bed last night leaving you all with a half truth, which I guess is simply a lie, no matter how you look at it. I told you all Jerry's birthday party was tons of fun yesterday and well, it was for most of the kids/people there. But Jerry did not have as good a day as he could have. And after crying myself to sleep last night and tossing and turning all

Common Ground

We found a great park in Lakeland off South Florida and Edgewood. It's called Common Ground. It's covered in astroturf so no worries of ants or mud, great for kids who hate getting dirty. It has a sand pit, a rock climbing wall, s

I'm not sure where you would go for diagnosis of visual processing disorder. Logically, the school SHOULD be equipped to do this. Even if the school cant apply a label, they should be trying to figure out how someone in special education processes information. How can you teach someone if you don't know this?

My first and only neurological label until I was 31 years old was SLD (Specific Learning Disability). Interestingly all my old EIP's were in the Josh files my mother saved. Along with my birth certificate and other important papers. So yeah, all they had for my "exceptionality" was Specific Learning Disability... That label doesn't sound too SPECIFIC if you ask my opinion.

I went to see a Neurologist a month ago to look into my "not being able to visualize issue". I think the correct term is actually deficits in non verbal working memory. I think I know where the neurological basis of this issue is. I think there will be some type of abnormality in the region of the hippocampus of the right temporal lobe. That is supposed to be the area of the brain that processes visual memory and does "visual spacial" (a type of mental imagery) processing. It may also be the focus (source) of simple partial seizures. I had a 24 hour EEG done that will confirm if the muscle twitches and tingling sensations I think could be seizure symptoms are actually seizures or not. A normal MRI and MRI with contrast was also done to see what the brain structure looks like. The contrast MRI will show any tumors or damaged tissue. I get the results tomorrow. It's been a hard month to be someone that cannot stop themselves from thinking too much. I'll probably be coming home from the doctor's office tomorrow with some new labels to add to my collection.

Ok, back on track... Here is a link to a PDF with some great information about learning disabilities. Visual and auditory processing issues are both covered. This is intended to older children, but it may help you understand what's going on in Jerry's head, or help you ask the right questions to figure it out.

How did I compensate? Rhythm and repetition to remember facts, and figuring out similarities to other things to remember concepts. I recall my basic math like small audio files. My mother used kind of a sing song voice that kept the same tempo. 1 + 1 is 2, 2 + 2 is 4. The way she said them was always the same. Somehow this stuck. I also remember my fifth grade teacher's phone number because she sung it during a lesson when she was telling us that sometimes we can remember things better if we sing them.

That may not be helpful with learning individual letters in the alphabet, but it will help in learning the alphabet as a whole when he get's to that. I have to play the alphabet song in my head anytime I need to put something in alphabetical order. If the letter is not one of the first or last letters in the alphabet, I have to go through the whole dang thing to figure out where the letter I am sorting falls in relation to the other letters I have already sorted. Learning the alphabet song could be a small triumph for Jerry, and a delightful annoyance for you depending on how often he sings it. :-)

For learning individual letters, I think it must be figured out if Jerry has made the relation between sounds he uses to speak and the visual representation of those sounds. I think that having the entire alphabet in clear, big text in front of him may help. Then he wouldn't have to figure out what symbol this sound goes with out of nowhere. He can just point to the correct letter. After that association is solid, then it may be easier for him to go from knowing what a word sounds like to presenting those sounds in visual form via writing.

As I said before, learning through association is one of the ways i get things to stick. Breaking down words may seem ahead of the game, but maybe breaking down small words will be the way the information sticks for Jerry. Cat (kuh, a, t). "I know what the sound "kuh" is, it's this one "c"." If I don't understand the relation of a something to other somethings, then I won't learn it. If Jerry is the same way, individual letters may be difficult by themselves, but they may make more sense to him by breaking them down into individual sounds that are part of words he is already familiar with.

I hope that's helpful. I have no training in education. This is all just speculation and personal experience.

Hi Tara, Thanks for the suggestion! I actually already found the Superhero ABC's book & HE DID love it! I wish someone would write MORE of this stuff, as he knows all his letters now.

I watched you video and the part at the doctor's made me laugh so hard ,turning and counting to 10. When Tristan was three the doctor asked him to jump on one foot, and he ran over to me and started jumping on my foot. I was like "What is he doing?" the doctor said he is jumping on one foot, it just happens to be your one foot. LOL
