I might see if I can offer anything. I have AS. He may be a step above because he likely knows he has AS. I grew up knowing I was different, but not knowing what the heck it was. I suppose I have been told at 7 I had AS; but long since forgot. Then…

We have to be careful about drawing conclusions re oxygen at birth. Of course, the people who had this experience are jumping in here. But the people who did not have this experience are not. So there is a highly biased sample responding to this pos…

Janet, What makes you think that you need to be doing more? Do you feel like something is missing? It's not all about services, it's about trying to address the needs of the aspergers condition without attempting to change the child into an NT (neu…

I have read as much as I can because many "experts" don't really know what our kids need. I think my son gets way more therapy and help from me than anyone else. If I think of anything else, I will let you know. I haven't had much luck with help eit…

When I found out about my son, his Dr. did not have much to tell me besides to go join a support group. At first I didn't want to, but ever since I put aside the pride, it is one of the best things that I could have ever done for the both of us. To…

Hello All!!

Hello! My name is Janet. My oldest son, Benjamin, was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in late November of 2007. I am learning as I go. I have him on medication, in Occupational Therapy, and I am currently trying to get him in a program that will help out with doctors. I have no clue what to do now. Like I said I am learning as I go. If anyone has any advice feel free to let me know. Thanks and I hope you enjoy your day.

Update on Family

Hello everyone! Just a little update on the family. Ben is doing okay. He is complaining of hearing voices. That kindda freaks me out. We are gonna get a med evaluation at Children's Mercy. The baby is doing great. Ben goes to OT once a weeks for 45 minutes. He loves it. He was kindda shy at first but now he knows all the PT's and OT's by name. He tells me about them every Monday. He can't wait to go. He is gonna go to summer school. He can't wait for that either. They do all sorts of fun stuff.… Continue

Benjamin

My son Benjamin is 6 years old. He is a wonderfull, smart, and funny young man. He enjoys playing outside. He is your typicla 6 year old. I realized there was something wrong about a year ago. He just wasn't Ben. He would have little tics, as I call them. He would shake and his eyes would roll back into his head. Kind of like a seizure. I was freaked out and didn't know what to do. I took him to the Children's Hospital and had him checked out. The doctor told me that it was ADHD and have my PPO… Continue

Janet,
Yes! Both of my boys picked at their fingers/nails. After constant complaints and reminders from Mom, my oldest has now moved on to "popping" his fingers nearly non-stop during the day. It seems like just a nervous habit for him. We still have picking issues with the youngest. Some weeks are worse than others.

I have talked to them about how their little fingers could get infected if they keep drawing blood the way they do. I even shared about when I had a hangnail on my big toe and it got so infected that I had to go to the doc and couldn't wear shoes. (I embellished a little on that one for them too to drive the point home LOL)

I think, for Josh, he can't stand to have even a little dry skin or something there. He will pick and it gets worse, so he picks more. When I notice that he's doing it a lot I try to inspect his fingers regularly and trim the offending skin with nail clippers. He completely freaked about it at first. Then he realized that it didn't hurt, but what HE was doing did hurt...it's a start, I guess!

Janet, Yes you can buy the ebooks online and download them to your
computer. I not only burnt them to cd's but made copies of them off
the printer and I then put the papercopies in a 3 ring binder that way
I have it in paper form and cd's. Does your computer have a cd burner
on it? It is great to be able to just listen to it while I'm cooking
supper or doing housework. There is a lot of stuff to have to learn
with this disorder and i am constantly listening to them over and over. The more knowledge I have with zach's disorder the more I
can help him. Talk to you later, Janet

Hi Janet, Hope everything is ok. Haven't seen you on here in a while.
How is Benjamin? How are you? I know during your learning process
it can be very frustrating. I can tell you what helped us during that
time and still yet is Tony Attwood has a lot of information. He has
studied Autism/Aspergers for over 30yrs. He has worked with Temple Grandin very closely. She has Aspergers and has written
several books on Aspergers, also here are 2 different websites
that has also helped us. We bought the ebooks from these people
and I found them very helpful: www.parenting aspergers.com. Dave
angel has worked with Tony Attwood and has come up with his ebook,
also www.The essential guide to Aspergers by Rachel Evans is also
another good ebook. They both not only have the ebooks but you can
get the mp3 version as well. We bought both, downloaded them on
the computer and burnt them to cd's that way when we are walking,
going somewhere in the car or etc. I can pop the cd in the cd player
and listen. They have helped me to undestand zach so much better.
Check it out and see what you think. Hope this helps, Janet

Janet, this is janet from TN. and we changed our email account and
our email address then changed also, so I had to rejoin this website
because it didn't recognze my old email address and would not let
me in so on the old my page you had made me one of your friends so
if Zach can't copy and paste my friends onto the new my page then we
may have to do the friend thing again. I am now Janet proud mom of
Zach instead of just janet. will type more later Janet

Janet, Everyday is a different day with Calvin, but when he see cuts on Calvin's body(he is a cutter also) it breaks your heart. I feel helpless. I would love to wrap up Calvin in blanket hold him tight just like when he was a baby and to never let him go.
Calvin rarely smiles and when he does, he lights up the whole room.
