Hi, Celeste! It's been awhile and I hope you are doing well. I have these same challenges to face as well. Only my oldest is NT, but the others have either variants of ASD's and/or co-morbid disorders. I sense the frustration they feel, but sometime…

school stuff, doctor stuff

Well we had a meeting at school last week since ayrek is behaving like a little devil there now too. well not as bad as at home but not conducive to learning. pretty much everytime his teacher tries to talk to the class, he starts making noise and banging his desk just to drown her out. i think maybe since she uses a microphone to talk to the class it is too noisy for him. so we get him to wear these construction earmuff thingys. problem is that he likes the way his noises sound even more with t… Continue

a long overdue update

seems like forever since i have been here and life keeps getting crazier by the minute for us. i think i blogged about some of ayreks test results but that would have been the first batch. well ayrek had a sleep deprived EEG on january 8th. its all been down hill since that day. just before christmas we had weaned ayrek off of the clonidine which dr p thought may be contributing to the seizures. i know now that it doesnt make any difference. we use the clonidine in conjunction with a hefty dose… Continue

where has the time gone

so i figured since its been a jillion years i should get my butt on here and tell everyone what is going on in our lives. aside from the holidays being my busiest time of year... ayrek has made me extra busy this fall/winter. you all know about the seizures. well investigation has shown us that ayrek is much more complex than anyone thought. at the beginning of december he had a MRI test done. this was done under general anesthetic but ayrek was super stressed. describing his behaviour as rotten… Continue

HI CELESTE,

I HAVEN'T BEEN ON IN A VERY LONG TIME. I WAS WONDERING HOW THINGS ARE GOING FOR YOU THESE DAYS? I HAVE BEEN READING A TON OF STUFF LATELY AND IN PERTICULAR A WEB SITE BY ANOTHER MOTHER NAMED JEANNIE BROCHART (WWW.AUTISMHELPFORYOU.COM) NOT SURE IF YOU HAVE SEEN ANY OF HER STUFF BEFORE? BUT WOW!!! SHE IS ON TO SOMETHING FOR SURE. HER WEBSITE IS A BIT OVERWHELMING BUT SHE DOES HAVE SOME VERY INTERESTING CHAPTERS IN FOUR DIFFERENT BOOKS SHE HAS WRITTEN.

HOW IS AYREK DOING THESE DAYS? LAST TIME WE TALKED YOU WERE WORKING ON TRYING TO CONTROL SEIZURES. I HOPE YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS? WELL JUST NOW MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU AND I HOPE ALL IS WELL!

My extended family that have been suspected of aspergers have never actually been diagnosed, because many of them live in areas where there may not be a lot of support, and because they don't fully understand the condition.

Hi Celeste! Asperger's runs in both sides of my family too. Although I am the only one actually diagnosed, one of my cousins on my mum's side of the family has been suspected of Asperger's, and my dad, grandma, uncle, and two of my cousins on my dad's side of the family have all been suspected.

Hey celeste....*hugs*. How are you? How is Ayrek? I do miss you and Janet. Life here has been crazy, but we are finally doen. Cale set the goal of B honours for grade 5 this year and he did it. It is such a long way from the kid who could barely read when he finished grade 3. I am sooooo proud of him. He was so excited when he got his little medal. Then he came home and said he wants A honours next year. It may kill me, but we will try. The kids are now swimming and bike riding everyday..lol...and trying to avoid the weeding I keep nagging them about. Hope all is well with you...
I had a cCrona at the dock last night and thought of you

Hi Celeste, thanks for the info. I have a family doctor who's also an obstetrician, she delivered both my son and daughter. My mom reminded me that I had asked for Alex to be referred for assessment when he was 3. But that I canceled the appointment. I guess I didn't think there was enough evidence at 3 for a diagnosis.
I used to work full time but I quit last year to go back to university and that's where I am now. I'm a single mom, his father and I are divorced.
Here's a bit of info on Alex and why I suspect Asperger's:
-obessions! Thomas the Tank Engine of course. We've amassed quite a collection of trains and track. He's been obsessed since a very early age and still is. From about 2 and a half to 4 years of age, he would not play with anything else, ever. Right now he loves Nascar, we also have a huge collection of Nascar related stuff. He loves to line them up and make racing noises, he could make the noises from morning till night, he never gets sick of it. He knows all the drivers and car numbers and who won what race. He went through a Titanic obsessions as well. He attends a before and after school program and in the morning, one of the administrators takes him to look for lost hockey pucks around the outdoor rinks. He will now not stop looking for them. They had to go looking for him the other day because he didn't come in after school, too busy looking for pucks.
-He is enrolled in swimming lessons since September. He has just learned to put his head underwater, way behind all of the other kids. He also has a phobia of the deep end. Skating lessons a few years ago were a nightmare. I don't think he ever stopped screaming.
-His teacher at school says he has trouble during circle time. He makes noises and will not stay quiet while she is talking.
-He has two close friends that he plays with at daycare and school. They have the same interests as him, trains, Nascar and sports. The other day, the daycare worker said that his two friends were gone and Alex said that he was bored and wanted to go home. He would not engage with the other kids. Although, his teacher at school says that he's very imaginative and all the other kids want to play with him, they like his style of play.
-He has destructive meltdowns where he can't tell me what's wrong. The other night we were going to practice reading, which we have to do for school, and after ten minutes of screaming, throwing, hitting and banging the wall he can finally tell me he doesn't want to read. Frustrating.
- I sympathize with your son's poop issues, lol. Alex used to hold his in ALL the time. He still does from time to time and I still have issues with him putting the toilet paper in the toilet and not in the garbage, lol.
-Eye contact is a problem. He takes a long time to get used to new people. And sometimes he is just not comfortable with someone no longer how long he's known them. Like my mom, she will address him and he will not respond. He often doesn't know the correct response. His teacher says that she spent some time one on one with each kid and discussed bullying and what to do if you encounter a bully. She said his responses were just so far off than all the other kids.
-He takes a long time to get used to new situations, swimming lessons is a prime example.
-He had a slight speech delay which I know is not usually a feature of Asperger's, but I was sent to a parent session on Pragmatics which I know is a feature of Asperger's.
-I don't know if this is a feature, but his teacher observed him in gym class and said that he has a stamina that the other kids just don't have. He can keep going long after the other kids are tired.
-Clumsiness is usually a feature but Alex is not clumsy. In fact, he has exceptional athletic ability. He loves any kind of sport and he plays them all well. He played baseball in the summer and one of the kids grandpa's was there. He used to be a baseball scout and he came up to us and said that Alex has real talent.
- He was just a different baby. Very disconnected. Looking back, I see it now, but he was my first baby, so I just didn't know then.

Sorry for this huge long post, I just wanted to point out the similarities between our sons and why I think mine has Asperger's as well. Good to meet you too!!

Hi, Celeste, that would be a great idea, you can leave me your # in your e-mail if you'd like. That would be great to get us all together, I don't know anyone else in the city who can relate with our situations. As far as ASM goes, I should just phone there more often...eventually someone will contact me back.Been kind of a rough week for me, otherwise I am doing well.TC -Janice
