do any of your aspie kids always have to have something in their hands or pocket?

p
Please tell me that I'm not the only one. The teachers can't teach the class and all of my sons focus goes to the objects he carries.

THIS IS VERY NORMAL FOR SOME ASPIE'S. SENSORY ISSUES ARE USUALLY THE CAUSE AND THE OBJECT EITHER DISTRACTS THE CHILD OR CALMS THEM WHEN FEELING STRESS. THE GOAL WOULD BE TO FIND OUT WHAT IS THE TRIGGER THAT CAUSES YOUR CHILD TO NEED TO HAVE SOMETHING IN HIS HAND? ONCE YOU FIGURE THAT OUT- YOU WORK WITH YOUR CHILD TO FIND A MORE APPROPRIATE WAY TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE- BE IT STRESS, BOADOM OR A NEED TO SIMPLY TOUCH SOMETHING.

Yes. I'm always having to move something, and my favorite thing to do is to play with something in my hands. Tennis balls, rocks, pencils...but usually something that makes a clicking noise or that bends on some kind of hinge. Socket wrenches are the best. Tina is right when she says that sensory issues are the cause, although the teacher should chill. The object that is being played with is just a way to keep our consintration on the present. Otherwise, we just close up into our own worlds, or freak out because WE HAVE TO MOVE. Especially in a repetitive manner. There's not squat you can do about it, so tell the teachers to chill out and give them a stress ball. Or better yet, give your kid one. They're awesome.

They gave my son a wedge to sit on and a rubberband at the bottom of his seat to "play" with (for his feet) and that helps him focus (7 years old). He has serious sensory issues and must be moving at all times. With the wedge that he sits on in school, at least it allows for mobility without getting out of his seat. The band offers his feet something to do so he can concentrate on what he is doing in class (especially with writing).
